Romans 8:5-6
5 For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. 6 For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace.
Our Eagle Students leadership team has noticed a rise in depression and anxiety among our young people. It may be just an impression, but it’s one that’s backed up by stats nationwide. Teenagers are struggling with anxiety and depression at extremely high rates. And it’s not limited to students; adults are struggling too. There’s a mental health component that I trust counselors and psychologists to help with, and I’m thankful for them. These are very real issues. But I have a nagging feeling that the Spirit wants to bring greater freedom to His people in this area. God wants every believer to set their mind on the Spirit, who brings life and peace. It’s one of the many gifts of salvation. I’ve recently gone through a season of pretty high anxiety. I took a multi-faceted approach, but I wanted the Spirit to be at the center of it all. Days where I was driven by my flesh tended to end with high anxiety, feelings of inadequacy and a woe-is-me attitude. But the more I pushed into letting the Holy Spirit guide me, speak to me and give me His peace, the more I could rest, relax and find joy. There are so many who relate. Perhaps there are some One Day moments coming. I trust that as we set our minds on the Spirit, these types of One Day moments will come more and more regularly.
Dear Jesus, so many feel anxious. So many feel depressed. We know that You are the God of HOPE. Give me this day a divine perspective. Give me this day a greater window into all that it means to live according to the Spirit. And bless us with your life and peace. In the power of Jesus, Amen.
