Q&A on Money, Giving, Stewardship (Part 2)

Can I tithe if I’m not a member of the church?
Yes! And consider being a part of a membership class to learn more about what that would look like for you.

Should you tithe your off your tax return?
Not necessary if you tithed off your gross.  But if you didn’t tithe off your gross than consider making up that gap by tithing off of your tax return.

I live on social security. Do I tithe on this as I’m sure I did not tithe on every pay check (from years ago)? What do you think?
Bringing God your “first fruits” would be giving based on your pre-tax income.  And giving would simply be based on your income at the present time.

Do you need to reestablish online giving each year?
No, it will continue until you make a change to it.

What percentage of the general fund goes directly to missions?
10.5%

I appreciate Eagle making strides to increase the amount we are giving to the least; the poor the widows. Is there a percentage of the church budget that we should be striving to give away?
This year 10.5% of every dollar given to Eagle will be given away to mission work (locally and globally). The elders will evaluate this year-by-year. The hope would be that this percentage consistently grows.

If we give directly to the general fund, will you all redirect to benevolence and/or missions or another category as you see fit?
10.5% of every dollar given to the general fund goes to missions currently. The benevolence fund is built up through gifts given directly to it. The elders could choose to move monies from general fund to the benevolence fund if a situation warranted it.

Why is there a breakdown on the offering envelope of different “pots” to give money to? Why not just give it and entrust the leadership to steward it accordingly? Or are the other categories intended to be for beyond the 10%?
Yes, the additional categories allow people to give “above and beyond” their tithe to these areas.

What about gifts/bonuses? When there’s a monetary gift from your employer or family/friend, are those tithing incomes?
The general principle is this: Whatever income God entrusts to you (salary, bonus, gift, inheritance…etc.), bring the first 10% of that income as an offering to the Lord.

Why should the church debt take priority to my household debt?
It’s not a question of whether or not getting rid of your debt or the church's debt is more important. We are called to tithe, no matter what the church's debt situation is.  Holding back money to pay off your own debt is not a reason to not give.  We put our trust into the leaders of the church to make the right decisions with the money that God has brought their way.  If getting out of debt is important in your personal finances, focus on the sacrifices you need to make on the 90% that you have left after the tithe.
