We had a special privilege while at the children's home this week. We brought the kids the very first presents they had ever received!
Can you even imagine that?
But it wasn't all fun and games.
As we began to hand out the bags of presents to the children, the kids began to wonder what was happening and were getting excited. Then a name was called and a little boy named Samson stood up to get his present. He eagerly walked forward and then we realized the bag he was being handed wasn't for him and we began to look for his bag. Samson speaks mostly Swahili (he's learning English in school) and didn't understand that we were looking for his bag. Samson's face began to fall and he slowly moved back to sit with the other kids where big tears began to fall down his face.
Mary and a couple other team members began to frantically figure out what had happened and realized that we packed gifts based on an outdated list of the kids currently living in the home, and several of the kids didn't have gifts at all! There were also a few gifts packed for kids who no longer lived in the home. Our hearts hurt for the children as we tried to figure out what to do.
We continued to hand out gifts to the kids we knew were still in the home and a miracle began to occur. Bags were opened and gifts were redistributed until, somehow, we had exactly the right number of bags with gifts for all the kids. It was our own bread and fish moment.
The children were overjoyed with what they had received! And little Samson, who broke all of our hearts with his tears, was smiling ear to ear as he played with his new Rainbow Dash pony and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle action figure.
Thank you God for providing for these children!
